Emotional Intelligence - Why is it so important

The only way to genuinely understand your emotion s so you can manage them effectively is to spend time thinking them through to figure out where they came from and where they are (Huffington Post).

Decades of research now point to emotional intelligence as the critical factor that set star performers apart from the rest of the pack.

Forbes magazine says "Emotional Intelligence is the single biggest predicator of performance in the workplace and the strongest driver of leadership and excellence".

Daniel Goleman and Richard E Boyatzis (from HBR article) found than many leaders fall into the typical EQ trap, they define EQ too narrowly. It is not only about social skills, empathy and likeability. EQ when used to the full extent helps leader improve in the dreaded areas of giving difficult feedback, ruffling feathers and driving change and think outside the box. They found that leaders need to have a well balance EQ to get through the tough challenges of business.

Goleman and Boyatzis say that the most important thing a leader can do right now is now their EQ and work on their weakest area first. They say coaching is the most effective method for improving areas of your EQ.
